Just when you thought elections were over, many voters in Fort Bend will get to go back to the polls Dec. 16 to determine who will represent state Senate District 17 when the legislature reconvenes in 2009.
Voters will cast ballots in a runoff between Republican candidate Joan Huffman and Democrat Chris Bell.
Since neither candidate was able to win the majority of the votes in the November election, they face off to see who will complete the remainder of former state Sen. Kyle Janek’s term. The office term expires in January 2011.
With “about 95,000 active voters in Fort Bend County and 54 precincts we’re going to cluster it down to 27 election day precincts,” John Oldham, elections administator for the county, said during Tuesday’s Commissioners Court meeting.
Out of the eligible precincts 14 will head to new locations because of conflicts with holiday scheduling, Oldham said.
Originally the county had intended to open four early voting sites, one at each precinct. But due to the crush of holiday traffic at First Colony Mall, near the Sugar Land voting location, county officials have designated five early voting locations.
