The Dayton Police Department has been awarded a $34,845 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.) grant from the Texas Department of Transportation. The grant allows for selective speeding and occupant protection traffic stops at designated locations.

“We did surveys prior to getting the grant on roadways where we have the most problems with speeding and occupant protection,” said Dayton Police Chief Pete Douzat. “Hopefully, after we are through with the enforcement period, we will see improvement on those designated roadways.”

The enforcement period began in late October of 2008, and will last until the end of September, 2009.

“We were able to improve our compliance rate during our ‘Click It or Ticket’ May mobilization program where we participated in the safety belt or occupant protection program,” said DPD Administrative Assistant Tammy Alexander. “So, we are positive the compliance rate will improve with the speeding and occupant protection enforcement program also.”

There are six designated sites which include Hwy. 146, North and South Winfree (FM 1409), and Hwy. 90.

This program is designed to help decrease vehicle accidents with speeding enforcement and increase citizen safety by enforcing the occupant protection which includes not only seat belts, but child safety seats as well.
