Citing irreconcilable differences with their landlord’s raising of their rent from $1,000 per month to $3,000 a month and an unrepaired massive leak in the roof at the back of the building caused when Hurricane Ike dislodge the air conditioner, Larry and Denise Wilburn are closing the doors to Pappy’s Barbecue at close of business on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
"There is just nothing else we can do,” said Larry Wilburn. “We’ve looked around and nothing is readily available and spaces that might be available soon are so high we’d be no better off, so we’re going to have to close down.”
Pappy’s is known for its barbecue, but also had a variety of items on its menu including steaks, seafood, and other popular items like chicken fried and hamburger steaks as well as the only full-line salad bar around that is extremely popular with those looking to shed a few pounds an watching carbohydrates. For those who could care less, Pappy’s was also home to some of the best homemade pies anywhere.
“We’re going to close and end of business on Wednesday,” said Wilburn. “Then we’ll take Thanksgiving off and on Friday come in and separate out some items we won’t be able to store like tables and chairs and other things that decorate Pappy’s and have a ‘restaurant sale.’ We’ll start selling things that Saturday morning and go from there.”
