Class 5A Division II State Quarterfinals

Klein Oak Panthers (10-1) vs. Copperas Cove Bulldawgs (12-1)

7:30 p.m. at Corsicana ISD Stadium

A quick breakdown: Klein Oak advanced to the state quarterfinals for the second time in three years and the second time in school history. Last time, they lost to Garland in this round. They’ll face a Copperas Cove team that overcame a 13-point deficit to beat Cy Ridge, 55-48 last Friday in Waco, on a 40-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds remaining. The winner will play Wylie or Cedar Hill in the state semifinals next week.

When Klein Oak has the ball: The Panthers are versatile on offense. Junior quarterback Andy Wilson passed for 233 yards last week, and the team is also capable of getting things done on the ground. Panthers coach David Smith said senior running back Ossam Cook, District 13’s leading rusher, will be 100 percent on Friday after seeing limited action against Dallas Lake Highlands.

When Copperas Cove has the ball: The Bulldawgs love to play power football, and they have several running backs capable of making big plays, including junior William Wright, who had 272 yards and three touchdowns against Cy Ridge. Their late game heroics showed that they’re able to get it done through the air as well.

Keep your eyes on these two: Cook; Wright

The deciding factor(s) will be: Klein Oak’s defense. The Panthers’ defense has been one of their strengths all season, in addition to their ability to create turnovers. If they can do those two things, they’ll be able to limit the Bulldawgs’ running game.

Prediction: Klein Oak 32, Copperas Cove 21

Girls Basketball

Cy-Fair 60, Alief Elsik 38 – The Lady Bobcats (6-2) overcame a slow first half to defeat Alief Elsik. Chiney Ogwumike and Cassie Peoples scored 22 and 19 points, respectively, for Cy-Fair.
