Cy Ridge High football coach Gary Thiebaud knows his squad is about to face a playoff-experienced squad in Copperas Cove, the two-time defending Class 4A runner-up.
“They’re very experienced, very well-coached, and have a lot of speed,” Thiebaud said. “They’re one of the real solid programs in the state that traditionally is deep in the playoffs every year. They’re used to winning and playing.”
Cy Ridge (8-2) will face Copperas Cove (11-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waco ISD Stadium. The Rams preferred to play the game at Kyle Field in College Station, but they lost the coin flip and now must travel to Waco; Copperas Cove, which is adjacent to Fort Hood and Killeen, is much to closer to Waco than College Station.
The Rams (8-2) have got use to winning themselves, winning six straight on the strength of All-American senior quarterback Russell Shepard’s 37 touchdowns in 10 games.
“Russell is a tremendous football player, and he’s playing a very high level,” Thiebaud said. “He’s still growing, developing. The sky is the limit for him, I’m extremely proud of him.
Senior running back Hasan Lipscomb is listed as day-to-day, said Thiebaud. Lipscomb suffered an injury in the regular season finale on Nov. 7 and missed the playoff opener against Round Rock. He saw limited action last week and scored a touchdown in the 42-32 win over Lufkin.
