Cy Woods 22, Klein Forest 15 – Cy Woods senior quarterback Lucas Devilliers scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner for the Wildcats at Klein Memorial Stadium last Friday.
Saturday’s games
Cy Ridge 42, Lufkin 32 – Cy Ridge senior quarterback Russell Shepard rushed for five touchdowns, increasing his season total to 37 for the Rams (9-2) last Saturday night at Kyle Field in College Station.
Klein Oak 49, Cy Creek 21 – The Panthers scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Cougars last Saturday at the Berry Center in a rematch of a game they won on Sept. 6.
This week’s previews
Friday’s game
Class 5A, Division II Regional Semifinal
Cy Ridge Rams (9-2) vs. Copperas Cove Bulldawgs (11-1)
7:30 p.m. Waco ISD Stadium
A quick breakdown: The Rams have won seven straight games since starting the season with a 2-2 record, and they’ll face Copperas Cove, last season’s Class 4A runner-up. Cy Ridge lost in the regional semifinal round last season. The winner of this game will face Klein Oak or Dallas Lake Highlands in the next round.
When Cy Ridge has the ball: Cy Ridge senior quarterback Russell Shepard, widely considered the best high school player in the nation, scored five touchdowns in a 42-32 come from behind victory over Lufkin last week. He’s willing the Rams to victory right now. Senior running back Hasan Lipscomb is playing, but he’s been hampered by an injury he suffered in the regular season finale on Nov. 7.
When Copperas Cove has the ball: The Bulldawgs won their first eight games before falling to A&M Consolidated, 31-27 in the ninth game of the season. While defense has been their strength – they defeated Garland Naaman Forest, 16-9 last Friday – they’ve shown the ability to produce some high numbers offensively.
Keep your eyes on these two: Shepard; Copperas Cove LB Tanner Brock
The deciding factor(s) will be: How well the Bulldawgs will be able to limit Shepard. Lufkin held an 18-15 lead at halftime, but Shepard took over the game in the second half. It will take an exceptional defensive effort from Copperas Cove to pull it off, as the LSU-bound senior is playing exceptionally well now.
Prediction: Cy Ridge 42, Copperas Cove 23
Saturday’s games
Class 5A Division I Regional Semifinal
Cy Woods Wildcats (8-2) vs. Dallas Skyline Raiders (11-1)
1 or 2 p.m. Waco ISD Stadium
A quick breakdown: Cy Woods, a first-year varsity program, will challenge an experienced Raiders team that’s won 23 of its last 26 games. The Wildcats were scoring well over 50 points in many of their regular season games, including a 70-20 victory over Cy Falls in the regular season finale. But they’ve averaged 21.5 points in their two playoff victories over Georgetown and Klein Forest, respectively. The winner of this game will play Round Rock Stony Point or Garland in the next round.
When Cy Woods has the ball: The Wildcats are led by senior quarterback Lucas Devilliers, who has guided the squad to a historic inaugural varsity season. Cy Woods likes to go to the air quite a bit, often with short, crisp passes. They also have little trouble moving the ball down the field.
When Dallas Skyline has the ball: The Raiders have lots of depth and playoff experience. They’re balanced on both sides of the ball, and their only loss came against Dallas Lake Highlands, 24-20. Dallas Lake Highlands is still competing in the Class 5A Division II playoffs.
Keep your eyes on these two: Cy Woods RB Chris Walker; Dallas Skyline WR Mike Hall
The deciding factor(s) will be: Playoff experience. Obviously, the Raiders have more of it. But don’t underestimate what the Wildcats have learned these past two weeks. They’ve been accustomed to lopsided victories, but they learned how win close games, Georgetown by one point and Klein Forest, by seven.
Prediction: Cy Woods 35, Dallas Skyline 31
Class 5A, Division II Regional Semifinal
Klein Oak Panthers (9-1) vs. Dallas Lake Highlands Wildcats (10-2)
3 p.m. at Round Rock ISD Stadium
A quick breakdown: Klein Oak did something that’s very difficult – they beat Cy Creek, the District 15 champion, twice in the same season. And they clinched the victory in the fourth quarter with strong play from backups, quarterback Brandon McClain and running back Jeremy Mayweather, who replaced starters Andy Wilson and Ossam Cook, who left the game with minor injuries. Both Wilson, a third-year varsity player, and Cook, District 13’s leading rusher, will be back in the lineup for this game.
When Klein Oak has the ball: Cook has been the key to the Panthers’ offense, but last week’s 49-21 win over Cy Creek proved that Klein Oak can rely on lots of different players. Stanford-bound tight end Jordan Navjar had one of the best games of his career, hauling in a 37-yard touchdown pass from Wilson.
When Dallas Lake Highlands has the ball: The Wildcats have had a complete turnaround since last fall when they went 2-8. They’ve won nine straight games and the District 9 Championship since a 1-2 start this season, but one of those losses was a 40-38 loss to Garland, who’s still competing in the Class 5A Division I playoffs. Dallas Lake Highlands has a talented running back in sophomore Desmond Roland.
Keep your eyes on these two: Navjar; Roland
The deciding factor(s) will be: Defensive pressure. Will Dallas Lake Highlands be able to stop a Panthers offense that found its rhythm against Cy Creek last week?
Prediction: Klein Oak 26, Dallas Lake Highlands 22
