Wildcat comeback falls short

WACO – The Cy Woods High football team had built a reputation on erasing large deficits.

They almost pulled off their best comeback of the season - a 28-0 deficit -- but they fell short in the UIL Class 5A Division I Regional Championship, losing to Dallas Skyline, 35-21 Saturday afternoon at Waco ISD Stadium.

“Our kids have always (fought back),” Cy Woods coach David Jones said. “They’ll be successful in life. They’ve learned some valuable lessons. Traditions have been built, it’s a special, special group.”

Skyline (12-1) snapped Cy Woods’ six-game winning streak.

The Raiders will play Round Rock Stony Point (12-1) next week at Baylor University.

The Wildcats (8-3), a first-year varsity program, fell behind 14-0 in the second quarter with Raiders senior quarterback Chris Frazier, an SMU commit, leading the way. Frazier finished 14 of 19 for 150 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Trailing 14-0 with 5:43 in the second quarter, Cy Woods senior quarterback Lucas Devilliers took a helmet-to-helmet hit. He got up on his own, but then fell down again before leaving the field.

Skyline jumped ahead 28-0 in the second quarter with the final play coming off a recovered fumble, turned hail mary pass by Joe Powell.

Devilliers’ backup, sophomore Colton Huntsman, engineered a drive and punched it in with less than a minute to go in the half down 28-7.

Devilliers (11 of 24 for 128 yards, a touchdown and an interception) returned in the second half and connected on a 19-yard screen pass to senior wide receiver Brad Korndorffer with 7:06 in the third quarter.

“I got my head rattled a little bit,” Devilliers said. “I was knocked a little woozy, but I got back fast. I have a fighter’s mentality in me, and everybody else on this team does, too.”

Devilliers said after the game that he was OK.

Cy Woods junior defensive back Bryce Callahan intercepted his second pass of the game, and Devilliers led a drive, capped by a one-yard keeper that cut the lead to 28-21 with 11:20 in the game.

That’s when the Raiders put on a clock management clinic, winding the clock down to 5:20 when senior running back James White, an Iowa State commit, took an option pitch on 4th and 2 at the Cy Woods 20-yard line. That gave the Raiders a 35-21 lead.

On the next series, Devilliers threw an interception, essentially ending any chances of a Wildcat comeback.

Jones had an important message for Cy Woods’ first group of senior players after the game.

“Don’t walk off the field with your head down,” Jones said. “You set the standard. You’ll always be a Wildcat.”
