‘Doll Tea’ ushers in holiday generosity

An annual fundraiser that brings families together to benefit a local service organization will ring in the holiday season Sunday.
The Salvation Army will host the Christmas Silver Tea from 2-4 p.m. at a historical home in Conroe. Attendees can bid on hundreds of decorated bears and dolls to benefit the organization. The event includes an old-fashioned Christmas tea party with silver service, a formal punch bowl and homemade treats.
Conroe resident Susie Pokorski’s mother, Anne Moore, hosted the first “Doll Tea” more than 25 years ago in her home, and Pokorski said the tradition has earned a family reputation among county residents.
“It’s kind of a holiday tradition for many families; some of us feel like it’s not Christmas before we have the ‘Doll Tea,’” she said. “We have people go all out in designing the outfits for the dolls and bears, and people get excited bidding on them.”
While certain items can be purchased for $25, the ones that earned awards, such as best in show, will be open for bids at the “honor table.”
Salvation Army Capt. Joanna Robinson said the event raised more than $5,000 for the organization last year, and whatever dolls or bears are not purchased will be given to needy children in the community.
John and Alli Richards will host the event at their home, which was built in Navasota in the 1850s and underwent a 13-month renovation from the couple.
Alli Richards said hosting the event is a unique opportunity to welcome the community to their home and introduce their newest addition to their family, son John Canon Richards, to the neighborhood.
“It’s exciting; we’ve been doing a lot of work on the house to get to this point,” she said. “It’s great to be able to host this event benefiting an organization like the Salvation Army; it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
