When Madison Lee’s mother woke her out of her sleep one night in early November and said they needed to go to the hospital, Madison didn’t know what to think, but she knew it wasn’t good.

“I didn’t know all the details, but I was really worried,” she said.

Ten-year-old Brittany Fojtik, a friend of Madison’s, and her family were involved in a terrible car accident while moving to Katy. Brittany was thrown from the vehicle and her father and brother were both injured in the accident.

They were all life-flighted to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Her brother was given stitches and discharged immediately and her father had surgery and was then discharged.

Brittany suffered a broken nose, broken C1 vertebrae, damage to her vertebrae T3-T6, broken wrist, broken ribs, a broken pelvic bone, internal bleeding and paralysis from the chest down. She underwent surgery to repair her vertebrae and her wrist.

Madison and Brittany are both involved in the Cinderella Scholarship Program and both love to dance.

“We’re both dancers, so when I went to visit her I could understand how she was feeling, wondering if she would be able to dance again,” Madison said.

Madison wanted to help her friend any way she could, so she challenged the girls in the Cinderella Scholarship Program to see how much money they could raise for Brittany. But Madison didn’t stop there.

The Northland Christian School freshman told students in her Bible class about what happened to Brittany and her family and within one hour, Madison had collected $200 in donations.

“One student came and handed me a $100 bill right on the spot,” Madison said.

Soon, the entire school joined together and raised donations for Brittany. Madison’s brother Matthew is a senior at Northland Christian and her mother Tammy teaches at the school.

“We would just go around collecting money at lunch,” Madison said. “After two weeks, we had raised $1,500.”

Madison, campus minister Rich Reaves and another student went to visit Brittany again at the hospital. The money raised will go towards Brittany’s medical expenses.

Fundraisers for Brittany and her family are taking place all over Texas and Northland Christian is still accepting donations at the school. People can follow Brittany’s progress and donate by visiting www.caringbridge.org, clicking on ‘visit’ and typing in Brittany’s full name.
