Guns ‘n’ hoses was win-win

Updated: 12.03.08
At the end, the scoreboard showed a lopsided 58-12 victory by Bellaire’s firefighter-EMTs over the city’s police officers, but in reality it was underprivileged families “adopted” by those emergency responders who won the annual “Guns ‘n’ Hoses” flag football game Tuesday night.

About 200 people turned out for an epic battle, food, clowns and mayhem on the field, bringing with them nonperishable food and toys for admission and contributing cash to vie for raffle items to help needy families brighten their holidays.

Police Officer Tracie Mathews drew the kudos from fellow first responders on both teams at game’s end for her role in organizing this year’s event.

During the game, though, it was all business with youthful and some, well, middle-aged players going all out. They had the injuries to show for it.

“Nobody’s getting hurt from the game itself,” laughed one firefighter. “We’re just straining and pulling things that haven’t gotten worked since last year’s game.”

Game photos and fundraising results will be posted on this website later this week.
