Consignment shop offers community relations
By JENNIFER SUMMER
Racks of children’s and maternity clothing along with toys for children fill The Second Mile as owner Anne Stanley places strollers for sale outside and opens the door for business.
The Second Mile in Splendora, which opened in the middle of May, serves as an exchange store that accepts children’s clothing, maternity wear and any other item that a baby or child could need.
“When we first started, we were going to open as a coffee shop but we wanted to bring a service to the community they did not have,” co-owner Dan Stanley said.
“We make our place very accommodating for our customers and even those with strollers; we have enough room for everyone. We want everyone to relax when they walk in our store and get a sense of community.”
The Second Mile accepts items Fridays and Saturdays then they are sorted to the specific areas of the shop.
Customers who bring their clothing and items to The Second Mile receive an in-store credit that is the same as the consignment rate.
The credit can be used for any item at the store or can be put toward a photography session by Dan, who has been a photographer for many years.
Several of his photos can be seen hanging around the shop and he is available to take pictures wherever the customer wishes.
“We also want The Second Mile to function as a community support center and encourage the community to join us,” Anne said.
The shop started a stroller group which allows new mothers to get back in shape, and a kids’ movie night complete with popcorn and story time.
The owners also provide free Wi-Fi Internet access and coffee to customers who might want to come in and hang out for a little while.
The Stanleys hope to add more programs in the future as long as the community shows interest in their programs.
“We love helping people and being part of the community. Seeing our customers come in and watching their children grow as ours do, it is well worth it,” Dan said.
The Second Mile also carries cloth diapers with biodegradable inserts, organic child care products and bamboo swaddling blankets.
“Customers who shop at our store are being ‘green’ and recycling, which is good for the environment and will save money,” Anne said.
Additionally, The Second Mile accepts strollers, high chairs, bumper seats, toys, play equipment and other specialty items.
“We want to use The Second Mile to get the community involved and let everyone get a chance to meet their neighbors,” Anne said. “We wanted to get in a business like the one we are in to provide the community with a service and do something we enjoy.”
