Residents give thanks despite tough times

From the economy causing the stock market to drop to Hurricane Ike destroying homes and businesses, people have definitely seen their fair share of troubles in 2008.
Even though the hurricane and the economy are constant reminders from day to day, there are some residents who shared why they are thankful during this holiday season.
“I am very thankful for a family that accepts and loves me just the way I am. I'm also thankful for my church, Northway Baptist. I have been through a lot during my life and there have always been two constants: my church and my family,” said Humble resident, Angela Posey. “I may have gotten away from both for a while but they were there for me no matter what, eager to give their love and support whenever I came home. What more could a person want?”
According to Jim Brewer, he is grateful to be alive and with his family.
“I battled cancer this year and I thank the Lord and my loved ones for all their support. Without them, I don’t think I could have made it through this very difficult year,” Brewer, from the Humble area, said.
“I am very thankful for my friends, family, dog and cat. My friends are great and my family loves me so I am very thankful for everything,” Jordan Bleiberg, said as she walked out of the Wal-Mart in Atascocita with her friend Reese Newton and her friend’s mom, Janet.
“We are very excited about Thanksgiving,” Reese Newton said. “I am very thankful for several things but most importantly - my family and my house.”
Newton’s mother, Janet, said that this year has been tough due the economy and the hurricane, but she is still thankful.
“ I am looking forward to Thanksgiving and very thankful for my health, safety, family, friends and central air conditioning,” she laughed. “It was hard during the hurricane; we are just glad that things are slowly getting back to normal and everyone is all right.”
Atascocita resident Krystalyn Elicardo did not have to think too long about what she was thankful for this Thanksgiving: her family.
Larry and Mary Fletcher have a number of things they are thankful for this Thanksgiving including family, health and spending time with family, enjoying Thanksgiving dinner.
“What I am most thankful of this year is that all of my children are home this year. I have three sons and one daughter-in-law that have all served in the military and they are home with us this year,” Larry said. “We have plenty to celebrate and be thankful for.”
“I am thankful for everything including my family, Larry and everything. It is hard to say just one or a couple of things that I am thankful for,” Mary said.
The Fletchers were already stocking up on food items at the Kingwood H-E-B needed for Thanksgiving to avoid the rush and lines of residents trying to get last-minute things they need for their Thanksgiving dinner to be a success.
“I am thankful for everything. I have been very blessed with everything that I have in my life,” Kingwood resident Maria Rodriguez said.
