KISD’s Caruso honored by Environmental Protection Agency
Peggy Caruso, assistant director of maintenance and operations of the Environmental Department at the Katy Independent School District, has been honored by the Environmental Protection Agency for her work with air quality in Katy schools.
Caruso was named the recipient of the National Special Achievement award Thursday, after being nominated for her passion to improve the indoor environments of local schools.
“Indoor air quality leaders are doing great things in their communities and serving as role models for communities across the nation,” Elizabeth Craig, deputy assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, said in a release. “Together, we will continue improving the indoor air quality in all our nation’s schools.”
According to the EPA web site, Caruso’s exemplary partnership with the American Lung Association and Texas Department of State Health Services to educate others, as well as her initiatives for indoor air quality programs implemented district wide are being recognized with the award.
In 2005 and 2007 KISD was awarded EPA recognition for implementing a walkthrough inspection at each school campus and assigning specific staff members with responsibility for indoor air quality.
"Every school district should voluntarily implement the Tools for Schools program,” Caruso said in a statement. “The program can be used to coordinate a variety of activities that impact the learning environment. It saves money, is flexible and usable. Correcting problems before they occur has a positive affect on the education process.”
Caruso has worked for KISD for more than six years.
She will be honored during the Annual Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools National Symposium in Washington D.C from Dec. 4-6.
