Sophomore Deer begin basketball season 2-1

Coach D.J. Fiterman, beginning his first season as a high school coach, got right down to business with his talented group of sophomores as they recently just took a good home win against Clear Springs High School to move to 2-1 on the season.

It proved to be not an easy 2-1, to say the least, as the sophomore Deer faced an uphill battle from the opening buzzer of the season against Alvin.

The young Deer, feeling the pressures of being the opening act on basketball night, fell to an early 13-0 deficit but a serious collective effort from the bench help sparked a tremendous 26-2 run late in the first half.

After showing how gutsy they can be early, the sophomore Deer led 25-15 at the end of the first half.

In the second half play, the two teams played tough high pressure basketball that took the game into an overtime thriller.

Alvin found a way to pull ahead of the Deer, who had difficulty at the foul line (missing a total of 13 free-throws), to squeak out with a 51-48 win of the Fiterman’s guys.

The sophomores found themselves in another thriller, this time in Mustang country.

Coach Fiterman’s guys proved to be more then up for the challenge as they sawed away at double-digit North Shore leads on several occasions throughout the game until late in the fourth quarter when the sophomore Deer took their first lead of the game and hung on to battled off the Mustangs by a score of 57-55.

Leading contributors on a quality bounce-back win were: Blaine Burke- 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, Robert Wilcoxson- 14 points, 4 steals, Steven Syphrett- 9 points, 3 rebounds, Cameron Reed- 7 points, and Blake Gallegos- 8 points, 3 rebounds.

Riding a surge of momentum from the tough win at North Shore, the sophomore Deer returned to Watkins Gym looking to get above .500 and move to 2-1.

It would be another tremendous collective effort from all around as the sophomore Deer absolutely thumped Clear Springs by a pulverizing score of 67-22.

The Deer would hold Clear Springs to single digit scoring in all four quarters.

Leading the sophomore Deer in the dismantling of Clear Springs were: Steven Syphrett- 14 points, Sydney Sexton- 9 points, 3 assists, Nick Elizondo- 6 points, 5 rebounds, Taylor Miles- 6 points, 6 rebounds, and Cameron Reed- 6 points.

The sophomore Deer have earned their spot above .500, and are battled tested as they competed in the North Shore Tournament this past weekend.

They will return home to be the opening act for Tuesday’s Basketball Night against Clear Lake High School on Dec. 9.

Fiterman had positive words to add on his team’s efforts in their past three games.

“It was a good win for my sophomore team,” said Fiterman. “There were great contributions all around and I’m really proud of their efforts.”
