Helmet fails to protect motorcyclist

Authorities said a motorcyclist who was killed on the afternoon of Nov. 23 as he was traveling on the U.S. Highway 59 southbound service road near Townsen Blvd. was wearing a helmet. The protective gear, however, apparently slipped off the victim’s head somehow and was later found approximately 100 feet from the body.

According to Humble Police Accident Investigator Brian Waldroup, 53-year-old Gary Griffin, of Atascocita, was riding with three other bikers and was about to take the Townsen exit from the feeder road when he lost control of his motorcycle.

“He hit the esplanade where the road forks, but it is unknown why at this point,” Waldroup said. “Witnesses told us his bike started wobbling and then flipped over at the exit ramp. [Griffin] was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Highway 59 feeder road was reduced to one lane for nearly four hours as a result of the accident.
