Harriers continue dominance at Nike meet

Saturday was another banner day in a year full of them for The Woodlands cross country teams.
The Highlanders and Lady Highlanders won three of four titles at the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) South Championships at Bear Branch Sports Fields.
The Woodlands senior Reed Connor continued his recent dominance, winning over a star-studded field with a time of 14:56.8, a new course record.
Finishing in second and third place were Southlake Carroll’s C.J. Brown (15:08) and Lewisville Marcus’ Craig Lutz (15:12.4), both of whom also surpassed the old course record.
Drew Butler (15:25.9) and Landon Milhorn (15:45.2) finished eighth and 15th for The Woodlands as the Highlanders won the team championship with 71 points. Cedar Park (98) finished second and Boerne Champion (106), which won the UIL 4A state meet last week, was third.
One of the biggest surprises of the day was Seven Lakes’ seventh place finish. Last week, the Spartans finished second at the UIL 5A state meet to The Woodlands.
Junior Sarah Andrews (17:17) claimed second place in leading the Lady Highlanders to the girls team title. It was her first loss of the season. Chelsey Sveinsson, of Greenhill School in Dallas, won with a time of 17:10.8.
Colleen Murray (27th place, 19:01.4) and Shawn Dalglish (28th, 19:07.1) finished in the top 30 for The Woodlands.
The Lady Highlanders finished with 70 points, outdistancing Cinco Ranch (106) and Kingwood Park (108).
College Park, led by Emily Jensen (29th, 19:09.4) and Claire Andrews (30th, 19:12.9), finished seventh with 161 points.
The top two teams and five individuals in each race qualified for NXN, which will be held Dec. 6 in Portland. The Woodlands boys have now made the trip to Oregon four of the last five years.
