Provenzano makes history with TD club award

Strake Jesuit senior Brett Provenzano has made history.

And it’s the type of the history that will stand forever.

Provenzano was named the Houston Touchdown Club’s 2008 Scholar-Athlete of the Year last Wednesday at the J.W. Marriott and in doing so; he became the first athlete ever to be named from a private school.

“It’s a great honor to be named and it’s a great honor to be the first person from a private school,” said Provenzano, who was nominated by his team and head football coach Ron Counter. “Coach Counter was telling me about the history of the award and he mentioned that the private schools had been excluded for a time and so to win this, hopefully, there will be more guys from private schools to win it in the future. And I think there will be.”

Counter said he is really thrilled for the senior, who is a two-year starter at linebacker.

“Nobody deserves this more than Brett,” he said. “The kid just works so hard and he’s a great kid. He comes from a great family. His parents are just awesome people. And he’s just one of those kids that anything he does, he gives it his all and does really well with it, no matter what it is.”

Provenzano said to be nominated by his teammates and the coaches is a great feeling.

“To be recognized by my teammates like this makes it even more special,” he said. “It feels great to represent my school and my team this way.”

His father Charles said his son’s work ethic is amazing.

“It’s all been due to his hard work,” said Mr. Provenzano. “I mean he studies three or four hours a night. And he’s always working. He’s always putting time in with football and other activities off the field. And he studies hard as well. It’s something to watch how hard he works at everything he does.”

Besides football, Provenzano is a varsity wrestler and on the rugby club team.

Academically, he has a 4.3 Grade Point Average and he scored a 2160 on his SAT test. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and was a team captain for the Strake Jesuit social studies squad, which won a district championship.

Provenzano is also a volunteer at the Star of Hope mission.

The excitement from the award is doubled with the fact the Crusader football team is still alive in the 5A football playoffs.

They will have a home game at Crusader Stadium Friday night against Madison after starting the playoffs with a 37-21 win over Mayde Creek last Thursday night.

Provenzano said right now a lot of his energy is going towards winning football games.

“I am really excited about that,” he said. “Last year, we got knocked out in the first round. We played Katy right away and they go on and win the state championship, so we were disappointed. But this year, we beat a good Mayde Creek team in the first round and now we play a good Madison team.

“And we’re really excited about having another home game. Especially me and the rest of the seniors. But we know Madison is a good team with a good quarterback and a big offensive line, so me and the defense, we have to be ready to handle all that. We have to do our job. Our offense is playing well right now and they’re going to get score some points. We have to do our jobs on defense. So we’re looking forward to the game.”

Provenzano was selected among 25 finalists from all over the region.
