Second Baptist eliminated in second round
By MIKE TENNEY
For the second consecutive year, the Second Baptist School football season came to an end in the second week of the TAPPS Division II state playoffs.
The Eagles fell 24-20 to Denton Liberty Christian last Friday night in Temple after leading 20-14 midway through the third period on a Brian Franshaw nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Connor Wood.
“It was a good high school game,” said Second Baptist head coach Mike Sneed. “It went back and forth, and we had the lead, but we just made a few mistakes that hurt us.
Liberty Christian rolled up 355 yards rushing with tailback Reed Fitzgerald picking up 273 yards on 41 carries, including the go-ahead touchdown at the 9:22 mark of the fourth period.
“They’re a great team,” said Sneed. “They’ve got a great running back. There’s a reason they won the state championship last year and might win it again this year.”
The Warriors scored first on a touchdown run, but the Eagles came back with a score of their own on Josiah Tour’s 3-yard touchdown scamper. But he missed the extra point and with 1:23 left in the first quarter, Liberty Christian led 7-6.
The Warriors took a 14-6 upper hand with another touchdown, before Second Baptist countered with its own touchdown on a Connor Wood 3-yard run with just 26 seconds to play in the first half. Tour drilled the extra-point and the Eagles were down 14-13.
They would score the first touchdown of the second half to go in front for the first time, but the Warriors scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including a 26-yard field goal in the final minute to put it away.
The game ended with Second Baptist inside the Liberty Christian 30-yard-line.
“It was a tough way to end it,” said Sneed. “But we had a good season. We won our district championship and had a lot of fun this year with a great group of kids. We feel like we had some opportunities against Liberty (Christian) and just didn’t capitalize. But we did win nine games and that shows what a great season we really had.”
The Eagles close out with a 9-3 record.
