Katy Rotarians to hear about ending polio

In keeping with Rotary International’s drive to eradicate polio in the world, Katy Rotarians will meet Thursday for a program about the disease and see an iron lung.
This year the local rotary club raised more than $2,000 for ending polio, member David Frishman said.
The international service organization raised $650 million this year.
Only four countries remain, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria, where polio is indiginous.
Frishman said Rotary is working to raise money to end the virus so polio will only exist in laboratories.
Adding to the seriousness of polio, Frishman said the iron lung on display during Thursday’s meeting will add a visual impact for attendees.
“The iron lung moves the person’s lungs and diaphragm,” after they are paralyzed from polio, Frishman said.
He said it was hard tracking down the giant metal apparatus, as there are few left in the United States.
The Katy Rotary Club will meet Thursday, Dec. 4 at noon at Hasta La Pasta Restaurant, 1450 West Grand Parkway South in Katy.
