American Legion closes sale on old hall, looks to future

The American Legion closed on the sale of its old hall Nov. 19, selling the 7 acres of property to Joe Popowitz for $460,000, according to Tom Lewis, commander of the post.

The sale of the legion hall was necessary to cover the $63,000 debt accumulated over the past couple of years. Lewis said he is looking at prospective locations, but said that before any decision was made, it would be run by the members of the legion.

“This isn’t a one man thing,” Lewis said. Lewis said he wants to give the members of the legion a chance to voice their opinion. He said he would ideally like to find a location with a pre-existing building by the beginning of the year. He hopes to spend about $200,000 on a new location and building. Lewis added that he wants to be transparent with the members of the legion and show them exactly where each check goes and where every dollar is spent.

“The building was up for sale before I took office,” Lewis said.

When he took office, Lewis had to make the difficult decision to close the doors of the hall because of the debt amassed.

“I thought that was a good call, even though I didn’t want to do that,” Lewis said. He also expressed a desire to bring back bingo and community service programs to the legion.

“My goal as commander is to see that it happens,” Lewis said. He also said the legion would like to extend membership to people in Splendora and added he would like to see more people coming to the American Legion in New Caney.

Popowitz is the owner of American Fixtures Cabinet Company in New Caney and said he plans to renovate the hall.
