Cy-Fair community members join to spearhead committee
By VALERIE JONES
A group of 45 concerned members of the Cy-Fair community met this morning to discuss plans to organize a coalition to tackle the need for social services in the area.
Using information compiled from the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce, community members put their vision into effect – to form a committee that can address the needs of the Cy-Fair community.
Representatives from Cy-Fair ISD, counseling centers, various churches, county commissioner aides, hospitals, the Cy-Fair Chamber, local YMCAs and others attended the meeting at Jersey Village Baptist Church.
Objectives of the meeting were to gain feedback and develop ideas on how to form the committee and follow through on its goals.
“We’re trying to coordinate this effort, by helping people stay in their homes if they’re struggling or help those people whose homes were destroyed in Hurricane Ike,” said Justin Lindstrom, senior pastor at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church. “Demographic studies at the Chamber are available so that we can see what areas of our community have the most dire needs. We can be the hands and feet to lift families out of their current situation by being a voice to the resources that they need.”
Tuesday’s meeting was the second held in regards to forming the committee. The first meeting was made up of about 20 members from various churches who met with the Cy-Fair Chamber.
“If Cy-Fair was an incorporated city, it would be the 12th largest city in the U.S., said Ed Hogan, pastor at Jersey Village Baptist Church. “Cy-Fair ISD, the college system and the medical center are all spears of influence in this community. We want other people and organizations to become spears of influence too.”
Guests showed excitement at the meeting, offering ideas on names, focuses of the committee and how to establish boundaries in such a broad area.
The grassroots effort hopes to get Lone Star College System involved and is planning the next meeting sometime in January, hoping to have decided on a name for the committee by then.
Lindstrom told attendees to think about data entry and web design, logos and branding and spreading the word about the committee.
Ideas and name suggestions can be emailed to revjustin@staidanshouston.org.
