Houstonians are familiar with the name “Goode Company.” Sitting on Kirby Drive, their family-owned restaurants have been a city staple since 1977.
So when a few decades later, Levi Goode, son of founder Jim, saw promise in the Northwest, he staked a claim on a plot of land and built a Texas-style restaurant that references a time in the state’s history when life was a bit simpler.
“All of our restaurants have their own personality,” Goode said. “We don’t cookie cut.”
A strong Lone Star theme sits deep in the heart of the operation, which opened Nov. 17, with a collection of Old West and American memorabilia — including a saddle from the Pony Express — sharing space with antiques and mounted bison.
Employees sport shirts that read “You might give some serious thought to thanking you’re lucky stars you’re in Texas.”
“We’re authentic,” said Goode, who can often be seen behind the serving line taking orders from customers. “We like to promote Texas food and Texas culture. That’s the kind of customer service we put in. And the food is prepared the way things were done before everyone was in such a hurry.
The restaurant sells seasoned meat, barbecue pits, and marinades for patrons who want to try their hand at cooking Goode.
And customers seeking a few cooking tips can view the owner’s demonstrations on the weekends.
“Our tagline is, we won’t make you experts, but we’ll sure improve your chances,” Goode said.
From seasonings to fresh-baked bread, all of Goode Company’s food is made from scratch.
The company owns their own meat-aging room where steaks dry for 30 days, a lost art that went the way of the buffalo with the advent of supermarkets.
Over the course of their time in Houston, the family business has maintained quality as well as staff. The Northwest Freeway location’s employees have a combined total of 36 years with the company.
Manager Jon Snell makes up a good portion of the experience. He’s worked with the restaurant chain for 21 years and attests to the Goode standards.
“I’m proud to be a part of an organization that serves such a high quality product and has such a wonderful base of loyal customers,” Snell said.
