2 re-appointedto Port seats
Elyse Lanier has been re-appointed to serve as a member of the Port Authority’s board of commissioners after approval by the Harris County Commissioners Court.
Houston City Council, meanwhile, also has approved the third re-appointment of Houston attorney, businesswoman and civic leader Janiece Longoria to the Port.
Initially appointed in September 2002, Longoria chairs the International Business Development Task Force and also serves on the PHA Community Relations Task Force and the Small Business Committee.
Houston Mayor Bill White applauded Longoria for “her hard work and willingness to serve the port. She is a proven leader and a true public servant,” White says.
Commissioner Lanier was initially appointed to the port commission in February 2006 to fill an unexpired term. Port commissioners serve two-year terms without pay.
Spacehab turnsloss into profit
While many other companies are reporting losses, Spacehab posted a net income of $55,000 on revenue of $6 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2009. That compares with a loss of $856,000 for the first quarter of fiscal 2008 on revenue of $8.6 million.
“Now that our turnaround is complete, first quarter fiscal 2009 is a solid beginning for our next phase as we continue to invest in the future of Spacehab,” said Chairman and CEO Thomas B. Pickens III.
COM classstarts Dec. 6
The COM Learning Center – North County in League City offers a time management class for one hour each of two successive Saturdays beginning Dec. 6. Tools learned in the class can be applied to education, work, home or pleasure.

Saladino namedto bank board
Alvin restaurant owner Joe Saladino has been appointed to the HomeTown Bank Board of Directors.
Owner of Joe’s Barbeque Co. in Alvin for 35 years, Saladino has been an active member of the bank’s Business Development Committee.
“Joe is a successful local business leader who will bring a wealth of talent and experience to our board,” said Chairman Mickey Gaido. “He has built his company on a strong customer service foundation, much like we have done at HomeTown Bank.
Saladino takes special interest in senior citizens, serving free breakfast to seniors at his restaurant once a month, for example. “Our seniors have done so much for us,” he said. “It’s important to show them how much we appreciate that.”
First Choice donates $25,000
First Choice Power has donated $25,000 to Interfaith Caring Ministries in League City for customers who need help paying their electric bills.
“We know that customers need extra help following the damage of Hurricane Ike,” said President Jeff Weiser. “Our company and our employees are committed to helping our customers. We hope this donation helps make a difference for those who need extra assistance this year.”
“We have seen an increase in the need for assistance (lately),: said Arden Stone, ICM director of development.
“First Choice Power’s donation will go a long way to help make a difference in the lives of families requiring help.

The 30-year military veteran most recently served as director of logistics and chief information officer at the Air Force Space Command Headquarters at Peterson AFB, Colo.

The Galveston Regional Maternal and Child Health Program reopened Dec. 1 on the seventh floor of the University Hospitals clinics building, located next to the UTMB emergency room. Parking is available in Lot 2 on Harborside Drive.
The Regional Maternal & Child Health Program provides prenatal care for pregnant women and their families, in addition to family planning and well-woman health services. For more information or to make an appointment, call 409-747-4952.

Ares Corp. has been named a 2008 recipient of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems’ Supplier Excellence Award, which honors suppliers that have contributed substantively to the company success.
Ares was recognized for its technical work on the Joint National Integration Center Research and Development Contract support the U.S. Missile Defense Agency in Colorado Springs, Colo.
A five-time winner of the Small Business Administration’s Administrator’s Award for Excellence, Area provides management and engineering services to government agencies and Fortune 1000 companies.

Clear Lake attorney Bill Wells has been awarded an “AV” Peer Review Rated designation by Martindale-Hubbell.
Wells, who specializes in cases involving serious injury and death claims, is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
The designation is a significant accomplishment — a testament to the fact that Mr. Wells’ peers rank him at the highest level of professional excellence.
A lawyer must be admitted to the Bar for 10 years or more to receive an “AV” designation.
The designation is considered the pinnacle of professional excellence earned through a strenuous Peer Review Rating and is the highest rating in legal ability and in ethical standards awarded by Martindale-Hubbell, Wells said.
Wells and his wife Keslie, both native Texans, are long time Bay Area residents and have two children.
