WrestleMania 25 tickets going fast
By Chuck Hlava
While WrestleMania 25 is still four months away, tickets for the event are going faster than you can say “three-count.”
It’s the 25th anniversary of the popular annual sports-entertainment extravaganza and this edition is coming to Reliant Stadium on April 5.
The event features a complete package and roster of super stars from several top wrestling groups. Top-flight grapplers from World Wrestling Entertainment will be joined in the ring by stars from RAW, SmackDown and ECW.
It’s the A-Teams of professional wrestling going head-to-head.
Well-known names like John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Randy Orton, Undertaker and many others will share the Reliant Stadium spotlight as they go for titles and glory, not to mention cash. After many bouts during the season, WWE holds its closer, WrestleMania. It’s like the Super Bowl of wrestling and is a huge event in sports entertainment.
Just participating in WrestleMania is considered having reached the top rung of professional wrestling.
Cena is one of the most prolific and versatile performers in WWE. He has so many championship belts it’s a wonder he doesn’t get a hernia. Not only does he hold three U. S. and WWE championships, he also won the Royal Rumble this year. A ruptured disc in his neck put him out of action for a while but he is all healed and doing quite nicely and anxious to get back into the ring.
If you’re a fan, you know that Cena’s talent has reached from the ring into the entertainment world. We’re talking about music CDs, movies and television.
His rap album, “You Can’t See Me,” was on Billboard’s Top 200 albums for 18 weeks and even made the Top 10.
Cena’s dashing good looks has helped him get on the big and small screens. He’s had a starring role in the movie “The Marine” and guest-starred on several television shows. In between ring engagements he is in the process of finishing another flick, “Twelve Rounds,” which is to be released in March 2009.
Staying in tune, Cena has worked with hip hop and rap artists, including Snoop Dog, in various projects. One is called “Artist on Call.”
“I like to do all that stuff,” Cena said. “I’ve learned how to manage my time to take advantage of these opportunities.”
But it does take some planning on his part since he spends 200-250 days on the WWE tour. He’s made several trips overseas, including mixing it up with U. S. troops in Iraq.
“I just get in my rhythm. You can do it but you have to plan to find the time,” Cena added.
Of course, his true love is WWE.
“That’s actually my passion,” he said. “I’ll never leave WWE.”
Cena, who turns 31 in April, didn’t get into WWE until 2002. He played football at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., where he was a football star. After graduating with a degree in exercise physiology he attempted a career in bodybuilding. That didn’t work out so he went into wrestling, starting out in minor league circuits before landing with WWE.
“I love it,” he said. “It’s something that has panned out for me and it’s something I feel like I was meant to do.”
Cena is excited about WrestleMania 25 and can’t wait to get into action here. He is no stranger to the city or to the state.
“It’s great for the city of Houston and the great state of Texas,” he said of WrestleMania 25. “The fans always love it and it’s going to be better than ever.”
Several noted entertainment celebrities are expected to make an appearance in Houston for the event, as they have in past WrestleMania shows.
Reliant Stadium holds 71,500 for football. But the smaller wrestling surface that a football field – the ring – will mean that more seats can be added. The WWE expects them all to be filled weeks before the event.
So, with four months remaining before the event, how are tickets moving? Through November, tickets sales approaching $5 million have already been sold to fans from all 50 states and more than two dozen countries.
