Texas Jamboree to showcase basketball talent

Some of the best basketball teams across the city, state and country will be on display Friday and Saturday at Strake Jesuit during the Texas Jamboree..
All squads will play one or two games with Strake Jesuit, Westbury Christian and Second Baptist among the local participants.
There are no championship finals with teams scheduled to just play games for the good competition.
“There’s always some great teams in this tournament, and that’s one of the reasons teams want to play in this tournament,” said Strake Jesuit head coach Wayne Jones.
His team has one of the last games of the event, a 6 p.m. tip-off Saturday night against Glen Oak from Baton Rouge, La.
“It also gives everyone a chance to play against some great competition that you normally wouldn’t play. Like with us, we’re looking forward to seeing how we match up against a good high school team from Louisiana, and that’s a team we normally wouldn’t play.”
The event is put on by Rick Nelson of Elite Action, which organizes high school sports tournaments around the country.
“They do a terrific job,” said Jones. “The tournament is always a tremendous success and the teams and coaches that play in will tell you that it always benefits their team.”
Westbury head coach Russell Carr said his team is excited about playing in the Texas Jamboree.
“We’re playing a 5A school and a team from Louisiana, so we know we’re going to see two very good teams,” he said. “It’s always a challenge for us, but right now, we’re looking to play the best teams we can find and this tournament provides us that chance.”
Both coaches said there is just about every style of play imaginable with some teams running-and-gunning and others playing a slowdown style. And they both said it’s the same way defensively with some squads playing man-to-man and some playing zone and others pressing all over the floor.
“You really don’t know anything about these other teams, so your main concern is how your team is doing,” said Carr. “And a lot of times, you’re finding out about these other teams as you’re playing them, so we really know we have to be prepared for anything.”
