Spring ISD students win academic awards

Spring ISD students have a lot to boast about academically.
Three Spring High School students and four Carl Wunsche Sr. High School students have been honored in the 54th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Receiving a letter of commendation for placing in the top 5 percent of more than one million students who entered the 2008 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test were Spring’s Andrew Bowman, Jonathan Marquez and Matthew Twomey and Wunsche’s Kaitlyn Lago, Pamela Martinez, Diana Cordero and Daniel Alvarado.
“I value education very highly, so this is important to me,” said Bowman, a senior who plans on going to the University of Texas. “It’s nice to be honored because it shows all of the work I did was worth it.”
The awards didn’t stop there. Spring students Kiara Littlejohn and Michael Tolch were named semifinalists in the National Achievement Program. This program is an academic competition that provides recognition for outstanding black high school students who qualify by taking the PSAT/NMSQT and meeting other requirements for participation.
“I feel very honored. I had no idea I was going to get the award,” said Littlejohn, a senior who plans on studying biochemistry and is still unsure where she will be going to college. “I really value education. I don’t think anybody can get anywhere without a good education.”
In other honors, two Spring High School students, Briana Adsit and Jonathan Marquez, have been named scholars in the 2008-09 National Hispanic Recognition Program, which was established in 1983 by the College Board to provide national recognition of the exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic high school seniors and identify them for post-secondary institutions. Students enter the program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT as high school juniors and by identifying themselves as Hispanic.
