Lyles helps win title

Austin Lyles, a former three-time medal winner in the Pasadena Schools’ Get Fit Jog, helped Argyle High School capture the Class 3A cross country state championship at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock last Saturday.
Lyles, a sophomore, was the all-important fifth and final scoring runner for the Eagles, nabbing 18th place as Argyle repeated as state champions.
The Eagles traveled 1-3-11-14-18 through the finish chute for its state championship 47 points, holding off La Vernia High School and its 63 points for the coveted crown. La Vernia’s No. 5 scoring runner hit the finish in 24th place. Argyle and La Vernia placed 1-2 in the final team standings last year. Lufkin Hudson High School placed third Saturday with 70 points.
Overall, Lyles turned in the 37th-fastest time for the demanding three-mile course, running the distance in 17:10.87. The time represents a big improvement over last year’s appearance at state when he was 52nd with the time of 18:34.15.
Teammate Stephen Curry captured the Class 3A individual state championship with a time of 15:49.90. An Argyle runner also won last year’s race but in the slower time of 16:09.70.
From 2002 through 2004 Lyles was always near the front of the large pack of elementary school kids who took to the streets for Get Fit Jog. He took to the event like a duck takes to water. He captured fourth place as a third grader and third place as a fourth and fifth grader while attending Turner Elementary School.
It was while he was a seventh grader at Bondy Intermediate School that his father accepted a job with Argyle ISD.
Lyles is the grandson of Frank and Pat Braden. Frank Braden is currently vice-president on the PISD school board.
