John Paul II teachers surprised with honors
Two faculty members at John Paul II Catholic School were surprised to learn that they had been honored with awards within days of each other. Cheri Van Sant, the seventh-grade history teacher, won the Wal-Mart Crystal Award, and Sherry Lamb, the school librarian, received the archdiocesan “Building Bridges” award.
The Wal-Mart Crystal award is given annually to deserving teachers. Nominations are sent in from area elementary, middle and high schools, and a committee selects the winner. An anonymous John Paul II student nominated Van Sant by writing a paragraph praising her accomplishments, and she was chosen out of some 30 other teachers.
Two representatives from the Westheimer/Kirkwood Wal-Mart came to Van Sant’s classroom Nov. 12 to present her with a plaque and a $100 gift certificate to Wal-Mart. The school also received a check for $1,000 from Wal-Mart. An awards banquet for all area winners will be held in March.
Sherry Lamb was attending a joint meeting of archdiocesan librarians and the Bishop Byrne chapter of the Catholic Library Association (CLA) when she and another librarian were summoned to the front of the room. Jackie Piar-Thomas, the associate superintendent of the Catholic Schools Office, presented both of them with the “Building Bridges” award.
Lamb serves as an advisor for the CLA chapter, and was honored with this award because of her efforts in assisting other librarians and her service as a resource for them. “This award was totally unexpected,” said Lamb. “I was thrilled and honored to receive it.”
The John Paul II community presented bothLamb and Van Sant with a bouquet of roses at a school Mass Nov. 14, to celebrate their accomplishments.
John Paul II Catholic School is located in West Houston and serves more than 700 students from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade.
