There's a new Lions Club in town

Crosby Lions Club President Chris Weise cuts the ceremonial ribbon on the anniversary of the founding of the club Tuesday, Nov. 18. In its first year of operation the club has worked to provide essential eye care to residents in need as well as provide relief grants to storm victims. The club’s goal for its second year will be to increase its membership by recruiting service-minded community members in the area, said Weise.

Members of the Crosby Lions Club have been hard at work for more than a year now establishing the town’s first official community service organization. The group celebrated its first birthday Nov. 18 with an official ribbon cutting ceremony sponsored by the Crosby-Huffman Chamber of Commerce.

In an official proclamation by Precinct 2 Commissioner Sylvia Garcia, Nov. 18 was officially designated as “Crosby Lions Club Day” in Harris County in recognition of the organization’s anniversary.

“The club’s membership of 15 men and women work to identify and fulfill the needs of the community,” the proclamation stated. “They are a vibrant and important part of our community, setting an example of pride and perseverance for generations to come.”

The Lions Club is a worldwide service organization composed of more than 1.4 million members from 180 countries with the objective of helping the less fortunate.

The youngest such organization, the Lions was founded in 1917 and have since tackled a number of social issues ranging from diabetes awareness and drug abuse to its most recent venture – blindness.

The Crosby Lions Club was officially chartered in November of 2007. In its first year of operation the 15-member club has begun its own program to collect and distribute eyeglasses as well as provide essential eye care to the needy.

“We are building this program from the ground up,” said club President Chris Weise. “We have had great support and outreach from the community and we hope to give some of that back through eyeglasses and vision care.”

The Crosby club’s program is part of the greater Lions Club’s campaign to combat rising cases of blindness in the world.

The campaign, SightFirst, was officially launched in 1990 and has since raised more than $140 million in funds toward the cause.

In addition the club has also awarded $1,000 in hurricane relief to local families still struggling after Hurricane Ike.

In order to raise funds for the organization’s operations next year, Crosby Lions also raffled off a 6,000-watt generator. The fund-raiser is expected to net about $1,300 for the club, which Weise said will be looking to expand considerably as it heads into its second year of operation.

The club has already formed a partnership with Crosby ISD to establish the Leo Club, a junior version of the Lions that will encourage student participation in community service.

“We’ve been able to give back some to the community, but this will help us give a lot more,” said Vice President Leah Baker. “Crosby has never had its own community club, so we’re very excited about the program.”

The Crosby Lions Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at Iguana Joe’s in Crosby.
