Artists’ Alliance of Sugar Land features ”Imagined Realities” art show
By DIANE TEZENO
Mishta Smalley, a local computer arts illustrator and member of the Artists’ Alliance of Sugar Land, will combine her background in applied arts and 3-D animation in a unique multi-media art show entitled “Imagined Realities.”
Her collection of pen, ink and computer arts illustrations will be on display from Dec. 5 - 31 at the Artists’ Alliance of Sugar Land, located at 104 Industrial Blvd. in Sugar Land.
The art show will spotlight one of Smalley’s artistic creations, “Sita,” a style-conscious undercover reporter, who travels the world from the beaches of Bali to the wildlife parks of Tanzania solving crimes in her quest for sensational news.
An avid traveler, Smalley depicts some of her own life experiences through her character, using a distinct artistic style all her own, that bears a resemblance to Manga, a Japanese-inspired artistic style commonly used in Japanese comics and print cartoons.
A graduate of the The JJ School of Applied Art in Mumbai, India with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, Smalley also holds a master’s degree in 3-D animation from the Academy of Art in San Francisco.
The Alliance of Sugar Land artist has over 10 years of experience as an art director at international agencies such as Ogilvy and the Lowe Group.
Before hitting the drawing board, Smalley develops a character sketch and examines the story she is going to tell on canvas.
“Even though most often she may land in a mess of her own making there is always that thing about, right place, right time, leading her to a life time of fun, crazy incidents she is happy to report back to all who are interested,” Smalley said of the character of “Sita” featured in her December art show.
Smalley is currently working on a male counterpart to “Sita.”
A native of Bombay, India, Smalley has been drawing since she was a very young child, and describes her mother as her “cheerleader.”
“For an Indian family, I came from a very radical family because we were allowed to draw with crayons on the walls and they never freaked out,” Smalley said.
Both parents were involved in the Bollywood movie industry in India, her father, as a movie director and her mother in production.
Smalley also art directed two movies and designed the backdrop of a gothic cathedral into a Tantric Temple for one of the sets.
After years of traveling, Smalley moved to Houston and calls her current art show her first opportunity to come out and show her work.
The Artists’ Alliance member describes her collection as “a fun-filled experience that will interest a wide-age group of kids, pre-teens or young adults looking for careers in fashion design, Manga, gaming or even the movies.
Smalley offers classes at the Artist Alliance of Sugar Land and shares her trendy and unique artistic style with individuals who want to translate their ideas into images.
A resident of Houston, Smalley is currently working with one of her students, Jake, a local musician, on designing a story board for his music video.
She also specializes in character design for the movies and gaming industry.
'Imagined Realties' will be on display at the Artists’ Alliance of Sugar Land throughout the month of December.
