Deer Park baseball alum Layo Anaya made his stay at Alvin Community College a short but rather memorable one as he helped lead ACC to a well-respected finish in the 2008 Junior College World Series as the starting freshman catcher.

Anaya’s efforts in the JUCO World Series earned him a selection to the Texas Junior College All-Star game as a freshman.

The selection proved to be well-earned as Anaya came on with nerves of steel batting an impressive .388 (from both sides of the plate) for the season with six doubles and solidifying himself as a young asset to an already talented team that featured former high school teammate Blake Lynd, who recently signed on to play NCAA Division I ball.

Anaya is joining Lynd at the Division I ranks as he recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play ball with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders after the stellar freshman showing in junior college competition.

It’s been a long road from the oversized catcher’s gear in Little League to a heralded defensive catcher on his way to bright things as a direct result of his efforts throughout the years on the field and in the classroom.

As a Deer, Anaya was a three-time all-district first-team catcher, Deer Park defensive player of the year, and played in the Greater Houston All-Star Game his senior year.

Ricky Crawford, Anaya’s former coach at Deer Park High School, had positive words about his catcher.

“Anaya is one of those type of guys you can hang your hat on, he always gives 100 percent effort every time and he’s a great ‘lead by example’ type of guy,” said Crawford, “There is no limit to how far this young man’s talents can take him.”

Anaya will be joining the Islanders and Head Coach Scott Malone as they get set to take on a challenging Southland Conference this year.

Malone was extremely excited about having Anaya aboard and he expressed that Anaya played an important role immediately.

In a recent article in the school website Malone was quoted to ‘look to Anaya as a solid replacement to senior catcher Steven Flora and commended Anaya on his leadership abilities while working with the pitchers.’ With high hopes for a season of NCAA Division I baseball, you can be sure Anaya is eagerly awaiting his opportunities to let his talents shine.
