The Hull-Daisetta Bobcats traveled all the way to Navasota to meet the Mart Panthers and found out why many consider them a favorite to win the 1A state title after dropping from 2A this past winter. Mart, with 28 points in the first half, coasted to a 28-0 win.

Things couldn’t have looked better for the Bobcats as they took the opening kickoff and began marching steadily down the field and well into Panther territory. Mixing a dose of running plays with some key passes, the Bobcats edged closer and closer to the red zone. In 14 plays, the boys from Hull and Daisetta moved the ball 49 yards to the Mart 31. Then, after a couple of long passes to the endzone, the Bobcats ran out of downs when QB Sam Elliott was sacked on a 4th and 11. The Panthers took over.

On the first play from scrimmage, the snap went awry and to the quarterback’s left resulting in a 14 yard loss. Mart, even though they made offensive gains, couldn’t make up the initial loss, but their punter nailed the Bobcats at their six-yard line. This is when Mart began to stiffen, holding Daisetta to three-and-out. The resulting punt was returned by Sean Farmer for 43 yards and a touchdown with just over a minute left in the first quarter.

This put the Panther defensive machine in motion and they forced a fumble at the Hull-Daisetta 38 on the next possession. Mart scored three plays later when Anthony Martin took a handoff and raced straight up the middle for the score from 27 yards out. As he went through the line, it appeared he might go down, but he kept his feet and finished.

Two more scores in the period and although no one knew it at the time, the halftime score would be the final as both teams played to a 0-0 stalemate in the second half.
