Cleveland Indians basketball young but ready

Cleveland’s head basketball coach Roderick Broussard has a team that is coming off a 16-15 record last year. They lost in the second round in the playoffs to Bellville, but this year, they are ready to advance further with a talented young basketball team.

Broussard has six returners from last season and four of them started, but now Broussard feels that have what it takes to get over the hill and advance to the regional tournament.

“I am looking for everyone to step up. They work well together because they have been playing with each other since Little Dribblers,” Coach Broussard said.

Last year the Indians started the season being 0-10 before heading to district as the majority of the team was made up of freshmen, but with the experience and success last season, the Indians are ready.

The Indians have had short time to prepare for their first game due to the successful football season this year, but they played last Tuesday as if they had been practicing for some time together. They defeated Spurger 64-56.

“We have only had one day of practice, but the kids played well considering this,” said Broussard last week. “There were some bright spots as well as some things we need to work on. All mistakes that were made can be fixed as the season continues.”

Although they had one day of practice the Indians’ playing abilities resulted in them never trailing and their winning every quarter.

“The game started off slow with several missed shots and turnovers by both teams,” Broussard said.

The Indians were led by Chazz Carrington 17 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and three assists. Cedrick Reed had 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Jaraud Ross had 13 points, four rebounds, and four steals and Christian Lovelady added 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Indians’ young team has emerged this season as an experienced team.

“I am going to let my players control the game because it allows them to play free so their individual talents can come out,” said Broussard.

The Indians have a long road with many challenges in front of them but Coach Broussard thinks differently.

“My one concern early will be to get into basketball shape,” he said.

The Indians (1-0) played Tuesday at home against Livingston but due to the paper’s delivery schedule, the results will be in next week’s paper. The Indians will play in tournament games from Thursday-Saturday. The Cleveland Advocate will provide the results.
