The Baytown Parks and Recreation Department will host its 42nd annual art exhibition at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4 at the Baytown Community Center, 2407 Market St.

Artwork has been submitted by local professionals and students throughout November and was judged by some of Baytown’s own experienced artists.

Thursday’s exhibition - sponsored by Krisher-McKay Inc., Realtors and Community Resource Credit Union – will be the award ceremony for the submissions where artists will be able to showcase their works to the public one last time.

Students from Goose Creek, La Porte, Barber’s Hill, Pasadena and Deer Park ISD have participated in this year’s exhibition, said Parks and Recreation spokesperson Shontele Williams.

With submissions ranging from crayon, marker and paper machete to acrylics, oils and photography, a variety of artistic styles and themes will be on display this year.

Recognitions will be awarded in the categories of primary, elementary, junior high and high school students, as well as the professional category, juror’s choice and honorable mention.

Jurors for this year’s exhibition are retired local artists Billie Brinkley and Phyllis Johnson.

Brinkley, who taught art for over 30 years at Goose Creek ISD and one year at Houston’s Glassell School of Art, said she was pleased with the range of submissions and age groups participating in this year’s event.

In a world where arts and humanities are being eliminated from grade school studies, Brinkley believes it falls upon the community to cultivate what she considers and integral part of children’s education.

“When I taught, we had students who would come to school solely because of art class. That was their motivation because they loved it so much,” she said. “What is important is that people take time to submit art and share it with the community. It helps people become creative thinkers.”

Artists’ submissions will be on public display at the Baytown Community Center beginning Monday, Dec. 1 through Sunday, Dec. 7.
