Workforce aiding UTMB in downsizing

Published: 11.25.08
Workforce Solutions is working in partnership with the University of Texas Medical Branch to provide employment assistance to UTMB workers who have been dislocated due to facility layoffs.

Operating from the UTMB Clear Lake Help Center at 20740 Gulf Freeway in Webster, Workforce Solutions staff is providing information to former workers on how to apply for Unemployment Insurance benefits, how to register in the WorkInTexas.com job matching database, and how to find crisis counseling services, if needed. In addition, job interviews are being conducted and people are receiving a variety of job placement services, including assistance with resume writing, job search strategies, labor market information and job referrals.

Since layoffs were announced, Workforce Solutions has been assisting UTMB by staffing a number of job fair and hiring events in Galveston and contacting area employers to participate. On December 1-2, 2008, the Galveston Convention Center will be the site of a major event. Health care workers who are looking for health care jobs will meet with health industry employers on Monday, December 1. On December 2, both health care and non-health care workers will have the opportunity to meet with a variety of area employers.

Future events include a Workforce Solutions-sponsored virtual job fair, scheduled for the second week in December, and more job-specific hiring events in January 2009.

Dislocated UTMB workers who need employment assistance and are unable to travel to the Help Center can contact any office of Workforce Solutions, including the Galveston office located at 4700 Broadway. They should call toll-free 1-888-469-JOBS (5627) and enter their zip code when prompted to be connected to the nearest office. Employers wishing to hire workers need to call the Employer Services office at 713.688.6890.
