Cancer research receives helping hand from students

They may not be quite old enough to truly understand the severity of cancer, its effect on its victims and their families and its potential lethality, but some of Crosby ISD’s youngest students are doing more than their fair share to help fight the deadly disease.
About 300 students ages 5 to 7 participated in a cancer awareness walk Nov. 21 at Crosby Kindergarten School (CKS), raising more than $5,000 in contributions to the American Cancer Society (ACS).
Inspired by Stallworth Stadium’s wildly successful Bay Area Relay for Life, last year teachers at CKS decided to start their own miniature relay to help raise awareness of the disease and to teach their young students the importance of charity.
“Basically what we’re teaching them is to give and to think about other people,” said Principal Ronald Davenport.
