Healthy Woman celebrates first anniversary in Cleveland

On Thursday, Nov. 20, the first anniversary of Healthy Woman was celebrated at the Cleveland Civic Center. Healthy Woman, sponsored by Cleveland Regional Medical Center, is a resource to promote women's health and general wellness.

Since its inception, Healthy Woman has enjoyed great popularity in the Cleveland area and its monthly events are always well-planned and well-attended. Thursday’s annual banquet was no exception; approximately 175 people, mostly women, gathered to enjoy a catered meal and to be entertained by guest speaker Carol Dean Schreiner.

Schreiner did not disappoint. Marching onto stage wearing a red cape fashioned from an apron with the letters “W.W.” across it and carrying a gold lamé-wrapped toilet plunger as a scepter, Schreiner got her speech off to a humorous start.

“Wonder Woman doesn’t live here anymore,” said Schreiner.

While her message was loaded with comical gestures and stories, one of her messages was that people need to find laughter whenever possible, even in some serious situations.

“If we couldn’t laugh about these things, what would the world be like?” said Schreiner.

Another message was aimed at her mostly female audience regarding their health. She stressed seeing a doctor routinely.

“Look around you. One out of two women in the US will die from heart disease,” said Schreiner, in one of the more sobering moments of the night.

Prior to the dinner, the day of health awareness for women was kicked off by an health expo, also sponsored by Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Those in attendance could get their blood sugar levels checked, enjoy a foot massage, get a vision test and stroll through the many booths of vendors who participated.
