Stone soup quite the dish for one local school

Stone soup may not sound too appetizing to the average Joe, but don’t be fooled. Students at Northland Christian have been enjoying this soup every Thanksgiving for more than 30 years.

As a matter of fact, stone soup has become quite a tradition for Northland’s elementary students.

The story of stone soup is about a man that has only a stone in a big pot of boiling water, until one by one, he convinces the townspeople to contribute one vegetable. By the end of the story, each person has added their part to the “stone soup” to create a wonderful vegetable soup for the entire town to enjoy.

Each grade at Northland Christian Elementary makes their own version of stone soup for Thanksgiving while the teacher re-tells the story. It’s said that whoever finds the stone in the soup will receive seven years of good luck.

Each student is assigned a vegetable to bring to school to contribute to making stone soup.

This year, each class’ soup was judged and a trophy was awarded to the winner – Melissa Flowers’ third-grade class. Flowers’ class used a secret ingredient – Tabasco.

Parent Del Martin had the task of judging the soup. He said he tasted 15 different bowls of soup.

“When I tasted the winning bowl, I just thought, ‘Wow. This one’s good,’” Martin said. “My wife was with me and we were keeping marks of soups, ones that were good, pretty good and that one just won all the marks.”

Martin mentioned some of the other soups lacked that little, extra kick that the winning bowl had.

“The others were kind of bland, but this one was a little spicy and in Texas, we tend to like things spicy,” he said. “I even got the stone in one of the soups I tasted.”

Martin has a son at Northland Christian in the 11th grade, so he’s very familiar with stone soup.

“This year I said we should get a trophy and do things right,” he said. “The kids were just ecstatic when they won the trophy.”

Martin said he’d be happy to judge the stone soup competition next year.

“Even when my son leaves Northland Christian, I still plan on judging,” he said.
