A Missouri City resident called police when she discovered a letter from the Social Security Administration ripped open and her social security card missing.
The woman went to the Missouri City Police Department on Nov. 18 to report the theft, according to the police report.
The woman told police that she had recently gotten married and had submitted an application to have her name changed on her social security card.
When the mail arrived, the woman noticed that the right side of the envelope from the Social Security Office was ripped off.
When she looked inside, her social security card was missing.
According to Capt. John Bailey of the Missouri City Department, there have been a number of recent incidents involving reported mail thefts.
Bailey said the woman’s incident was different, but warns residents of putting mail in their mail box, and raising the red flag for pick up, describing it as an “open invitation to thieves.”
“We have had a couple of cases lately where people are going down streets opening mail boxes and taking the mail,” Bailey said.
