Commissioner’s court votes on heath and security
By ALEX WUKMAN
When the San Jacinto County Commissioner’s Court met on November 26 healthcare and security were two of the biggest items on the agenda. The commissioner’s voted to apply for a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grant, select a provider for medical care to inmates and enroll in a preventive care program for county employees.
The DHS grant will be used to fund a courthouse security system. If the grant is approved it will be administered by Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG).
“We’ve discussed and talked about this for years and finally decided to apply for it,” said Pct. 3 Commissioner David Brandon. Brandon stated that the county’s application calls for the installation of Bosch Flexidome cameras.
Flexidome cameras are housed in a compact tamper proof case. They cost approximately $1,000 a piece.
The commissioners also voted to renew Dr. Robert Woodrome’s contract to provide inmate medical services. Woodrome practices emergency and family medicine in Livingston.
The commissioners appointed Deborah Winfrey as the county coordinator for a Health and Wellness program that is run through the Texas Association of Counties (TAC). TAC’s Health and Wellness program expands preventive care options for county employees and allows them to gain discounted membership to gyms and fitness centers as well offering classes in diet modification and smoking cessation.
Brandon stated that he had initially heard about TAC’s program this past summer when the county was shopping for a new insurance provider. “It was one of the things that Blue Cross/Blue Shield was offering that Aetna wasn’t,” said Brandon.
He also stated that he is “very pleased that TAC decided to keep this [the health and wellness program] in because it will reduce our premium cost which lowers insurance costs.”
