Harris DA gives MVPD $123,000 for various equipment upgrades

Updated: 11.13.08
The Memorial Villages Police Department will use money from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for computer and technology upgrades.

Harris County D.A. Kenneth Magdison presented a check for $123,425 to Gary Brye, MVPD police chief, and Bernard Hruzek, chairman of the Memorial Villages Police Commission Nov. 4.

MVPD will use $85,000 to replace mobile laptops and upgrade software in patrol units, $37,700 for infrared equipment to enable police officers to see in darkness, and $725 for more sosphisticated fingerprint analysis equipment.

The money comes assets seized during drug, gambling, prostitution and other arrests. The Harris County D.A.’s office has allocated more than $6 million to local law enforcement agencies over the last six months.

Disbursement of the funds requires approval of the Harris County Commissioners Court.

Magdison said that the seized funds enable law enforcement agencies to enhance public safety and investigations without burdening taxpayers.

“The money helps us with capital improvements that would have been taxpayer-funded,” said Brye.

The Harris County D.A.’s office will use $111,800 for interview equipment upgrades, $84,600 for scanners to reduce record storage needs and $48,000 for two investigation vehicles.
