Lady Bulldogs heading to Regional Final
Lady Bulldogs to face Brenham in showdown
By DUSTIN BASS
The Lady Bulldogs got to stay in town for this one, but whether they are playing within the Houston city limits or hours away, it hasn't mattered. Magnolia swept aside Friendswood tonight, Nov. 14, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23, to reach the Regional Smeinfinals for the third straight year. That, however, is where things have stopped the past two seasons.
Now the team will be facing Brenham, who defeated El Campo tonight, in the next round. The two teams split the district series. Magnolia won at home in five and Brenham won at home in four. Both split the District Title and now are vying for a chance to compete at the state tournament next week.
Although it will be an epic battle between the two mighty 4A clubs, the Lady Bulldogs definitely weren't looking past Friendswood and still nearly gave up the final set which would have forced a fourth one.
"I would like to have finished stronger," said Coach Terri Johnson, "but when you get to this point and you win in three, you just take it and run with it."
The team didn't make very many mistakes in the first two sets and forced Friendswood into numerous errors.
"Paige (Holland) really spread the offense around," Johnson said. "Hannah (Davies) came through with a lot of key digs."
The team had its mental breakdowns in the final set, making it very close but never surrendering the lead. Whether the team finished strong or not, it doesn't matter because it doesn't force any of the players to contemplate on any mistakes, because the team will playing again less than 24 hours from its last game. The team will face off against Brenham tomorrow, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m.
"It will be a battle," Johnson said of the upcoming meet. "It'll come down to who makes the most errors and who wants it more."
It's apparent Magnolia is wanting this one with several players are playing sick and injured including Davies, with a problematic shoulder, and Meagan Little, who finished with eight kills, has bronchitis.
"At this point," Johnson said, "you're playing to get to state."
Stats:
Kills - Kelli Stewart - 17, Katzy Randall - 12
Assists - Paige Holland - 41
Digs - Hannah Davies - 17, Randall - 15, Holland - 10
