A fourth-quarter defensive stand ended Kingwood’s football season Saturday afternoon, as the Mustangs lost 19-14 to Houston Lamar in the bi-district playoff round.
The first half was a half of long drives. Kingwood started with an eight-play drive fueled by a 31-yard run by fullback A.J. Paradowski. The drive stalled in the red zone, and after kicker Greg Saladino missed a 30-yard field goal attempt, the game remained scoreless.
The Redskins then marched down their field on their opening possession, moving 80 yards in just under five minutes and scoring on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Bram Kohlhausen to Joshua Gordon. After a missed extra point, Lamar led 6-0.
Kingwood answered on its next possession. A 6-yard touchdown run by halfback T.J. Olonilua early in the second quarter put the Mustangs up 7-6. Lamar then scored on a 9-yard pass from Kohlhausen to Gordon to take a 12-7 lead. That score held for the rest of the half.
The biggest play of the game came on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. Lamar halfback Patrick Andrews, a junior who rushed for 219 yards on the day, scored on a 73-yard touchdown run. The score put the Redskins a huge 19-7 advantage - only once all season had Kingwood come back from a double-digit deficit in the second half to win.
The Mustangs would make a game of it, though. Kingwood cut the lead to 19-14 after patenting a perfect 19-play, 95-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run from Paradowski. The Mustangs then recovered an onside kick to give them the ball near midfield with 4:44 left in the game.
Kingwood got a boost on its first play after the onside kick, as quarterback Geoff Perrott broke through on the right side for a 21-yard gain. But the drive stalled from there, and with 2:40 left in the game, the Mustangs faced fourth-and-inches from Lamar’s 23-yard line.
Perrott tried to get a first down on a quarterback sneak but fumbled the snap. Kingwood recovered inches short of the first down marker, giving Lamar the ball and allowing the Redskins to run out the clock.
As they have all season, Perrott and Paradowski had big days for Kingwood. The quarterback rushed 19 times for 124 yards while the fullback had 26 carries for 124 yards.
