Lady Eagles, Lady Mustangs both fall

Kingwood and Atascocita both came into the 2008 volleyball season with young rosters. After losing many key players to graduation, both teams had plenty of questions that needed to be answered heading in.

Those questions were answered and then some. Both the Lady Eagles and the Lady Mustangs stormed through the competition in District 19-5A, clinching playoff berths with two weeks to go in the season.

Both teams made it through their opening-round playoff matches, albeit in different ways, and both teams fell in the second round on Friday night to end their seasons.

The Lady Eagles and the Lady Mustangs started off the playoffs with opening-round victories Nov. 4.

Fresh off of winning the District 19-5A regular-season title, the Lady Mustangs demolished Houston Carnegie Vanguard with a 3-0 sweep that lasted just under an hour.

Kingwood was in complete control from the start, winning 25-12, 25-10, 25-6.

The match was a mismatch from the start. The Lady Mustangs had a clear size and power advantage coming in and they took advantage of it, recording 23 kills on the night.

Rachel Tower, Christina Curry and Kathryn Lupton each led Kingwood with seven kills.

Later in the evening, Atascocita beat a much scrappier Houston Lamar squad 3-2.

After losing the first game 25-22, the Lady Eagles came back with a 25-18 win in the second.

Atascocita held a 17-14 lead in game three, but Lamar’s Maatra Henderson served out the final 11 points of the game. The Redskins took the game 25-17 and seemingly sucked the life out of the home crowd at Atascocita High School.

But the Lady Eagles came back with a thrilling 25-22 victory in the fourth game. Capitalizing on the momentum from that win, Atascocita took the fifth game 15-10 to win the match.

Jeana Daniels led Atascocita with 22 kills.

Three days later, both teams took on much tougher opponents.

Atascocita fell 3-0 to Katy in a match that was not very close. The Lady Eagles failed to score 15 points in any game, losing 25-12, 25-11, 25-14. Senior Ashley Baker led the Lady Eagles with seven kills.

That same evening, the Lady Mustangs fell 3-1 to Katy Cinco Ranch. Kingwood made Cinco Ranch work in the first game, but eventually the Lady Mustangs fell 27-25. Kingwood could not recover from the shock of that loss, falling 25-11 in game two.

Though the Lady Mustangs took the third game 25-22, they could not come back to win. Cinco Ranch took the fourth game 25-18 to end Kingwood’s season.
