On Oct. 7, Kingwood’s varsity tennis team improved its record to 6-0 in district matches and 7-3 on the season overall with its 15-4 win against cross-town rival Atascocita High School.
Pulling out impressive third set wins for the Mustangs were Abby Keister, Ellie Rome and Mary Vondrak in girls singles and Mark Haugen in boy singles. Kevin Wrobel and Pat McGinnis won a thrilling third set tiebreaker to win their match at line one doubles.
Also posting wins for the Mustangs on the boys side were Adrew Ayala, Hunter Blankenship, Corey Bowen and Austin McLean. Winning for the girls were Kristen Barnhill, Kristen Deerhake, Abbey Thompson and Kate Wallace.
On Oct. 8, Kingwood defeated district rival Humble High School by a score of 19-0, to improve to 7-0 in District 19-5A play. The Mustangs’ season record improved to 8-3.
Playing great doubles were McGinnis and Wrobel at No. 1 boys doubles, Ayala and McLean at No. 2 boys doubles, and Sam Columb and Matt Fahrmeier at No. 3 boys doubles, Jordan Jacquez and Alex Rice at mixed doubles, and Rome and Thompson at No. 1 girls doubles.
Strong play was also shown by Brian Abell, Barnhill, Blankenship, Bowen, Columb, Deerhake, Chris Hsu, Chelsea Hylton, McLean and Wallace.
With the strong district play, Kingwood clinched the top seed in the District 19-5A tournament.
