Ladycats finish year with 3-0 playoff defeat to Silsbee

Splendora’s volleyball season ended with a loss to District 21-3A co-champions Silsbee in the first round of the 3A playoffs. Silsbee took the match in three games 25-20, 25-16, and 25-6.
“They are a very sound team and showed it as they beat us in three games,” Splendora head coach Twnia Atkins said. “During the last game, we had trouble getting things together.”
Despite the season-ending loss, the Splendora was triumphant this season making an appearance in the state playoffs while boosting the team’s character.
“All in all, I would have to say that it was a very interesting season,” Atkins said. “With the hurricane blowing in, cancellation of matches because of the weather and three weeks without playing a single match I was still proud of the girls for overcoming those obstacles and getting into the playoffs.”
A young team, which should only improve, was led by only three seniors. The seniors were key to the special season and the Ladycats’ run to a Bi-District bid.
“It is always difficult to come to the end of a season knowing that you are losing your seniors to graduation,” Atkins said. “ The seniors on this team played a big part on both sides of the ball, which helped us in the bigger picture.”
Setter Megan Gros had a gift of placing each of her serves enabling the rest of the team to read off her leadership.
“[Gros] ran the offense with the confidence and poise of a veteran player,” Atkins said.
Hayley Jones, who rotated in for Gros on the front row, also played as an outside hitter.
“[Jones] did a great job hitting and caught many opponents off-guard,” Atkins said. “Hayley had some vital solo blocks while against some of our stronger opponents.”
Middle blocker Misty Robison, who makes up the senior trio, overcame an ankle season mid-season, showing great determination to help her team.
“[Robison] was very consistent with her swings at the ball throughout the season,” Atkins said. “She ended on a strong note for the team.”
Jones and Robison are on the Ladycats basketball team. Therefore, Splendora fans will continue to witness the athleticism of the two. The volleyball program, on the other hand, closes its books for this year, but looks forward to another post-season run next season now dependent on the underclassmen.
