County, Porter FD offer disaster preparedness classes
By OBSERVER STAFF REPORTS
The Porter Fire Department, in conjunction with the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management, invites local residents to sign up for Citizens Emergency Response Team classes, offered at no cost beginning Jan. 15.
The course is designed to prepare residents for disasters such as Hurricane Ike and will teach basic skills that allow citizens to help themselves as well as their neighbors in an emergency.
When disaster strikes, CERT members are called upon to support emergency services. In the aftermath of Ike, hundreds of local CERT members volunteered their time at area PODs, directing traffic and handling logistics.
Classes run for eight weeks, every Thursday evening from 5:30-8:30 p.m., and will be held at the Porter Fire Department Station 121.
Topics covered include hurricane preparedness, fire suppression, light search and rescue, medial operations, terrorism and disaster psychology. The course concludes with a drill that allows CERT students to test the skills they acquired.
Up to 30 students will be accepted for the course on a first come, first served basis.
