A routine warrant arrest Nov. 12 could have ended badly for Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constable’s deputies when the suspect reportedly attempted to pull a gun from his waistband during a struggle with one of the arresting officers.
According to Precinct 4 arrest records, deputies approached Christopher Dewayne Rhoads, 24, of New Caney, to take him into custody for an open misdemeanor warrant, when Rhoads allegedly tried to run from the officers.
“I was able to grab the subject’s arm and force him to the ground,” the deputy stated in his report. “The subject continued to struggle and was reaching in his waistband. During the struggle, [Rhoads] was able to stand up again and continue reaching in his waistband. I heard a metal object drop onto the ground.”
The metal object turned out to be a loaded .380-caliber Browning semi-automatic pistol, authorities said.
Deputies managed to subdue Rhoads and police said a subsequent search resulted in the recovery of methamphetamine, several baggies commonly used to sell narcotics and several hundred dollars in cash.
Precinct 4 Constable’s officials said that Rhoads has a long criminal history in Montgomery County that includes an August 2005 arrest for two felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which resulted in a two-year prison sentence.
Rhoads, who police said is a known active member of the Aryan Brotherhood, was back in custody in September 2007, again for felony aggravated assault with a a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to four years’ probation for this offense Aug. 27 and had barely begun his probation when deputies took him into custody yet again.
Rhoads is being held in Montgomery County Jail without bond on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and possession of a firearm by a felon, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.
