Memory care businesses commemorate patients
By JENNIFER SUMMER
It is estimated that Alzheimer’s disease affects more than five million people in the United States and several groups from the community are hosting a ceremony to commemorate these patients and their caregivers.
Kingwood Town Center will be full of residents for the annual National Commemorative Candle Lighting Ceremony Nov. 13, which will be hosted by Visiting Angels, LAS-SarahCare Adult Day Care and Silverado Senior Living - Kingwood.
“We had over 70 people attend the ceremony last year so we are definitely excited. It is a great time for people to come out and remember those who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and those who have lost their lives because of Alzheimer’s or related diseases,” said Cristie Herring, family/community ambassador at Silverado Senior Living.
The event will boast music performed by the choir from St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Humble and names of people with Alzheimer’s will be read aloud to the audience either in memory or recognition.
Additionally, the Alzheimer’s support group from Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Kingwood will be on hand to read the Alzheimer’s prayer.
The theme for the annual candle lighting event is “Candles of Care” because it remembers those who work hard to make sure the patient is taken care of and all of their needs are met.
“The job of a caregiver is very demanding and can be tiring. It truly takes more than one person to care for a patient with Alzheimer’s,” Herring said. “This is our chance to recognize them and those affected by this debilitating disease.”
The ceremony is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and is held through the United States in the same day.
November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, which is why this event was planned for this time.
“We encourage everyone to come and join us for the candle lighting ceremony and celebrate the caregivers, Alzheimer’s patients and spend time remembering those who have already lost their lives,” Herring said.
