Lady Mav golfers take 3rd in local event

Updated: 11.19.08
The Memorial High School boys and girls golf teams have been busy preparing themselves for next season’s campaign and the 22-5A tournament in April.

In their first fall tournament of the year, the Mavericks hosted a girls tournament at the city’s municipal golf course.

In a field of 23 teams, the Lady Mavericks finished in third place. Fort Bend Travis captured first with a 371 followed by Willis at 385 and the Lady Mavs at 394.

“We played very well considering we have never played the course as a team,” Memorial head coach Mark Boyd said.

Individual honors went to Chelsea Gans of La Porte, who shot an 83. In second place and winning a scorecard playoff was Crosby’s Marie Castillo. The Mavericks were directed by senior Kristen Letbetter who shot the strong round of 84. Letbetter’s round won her third-place honors in the race for individual honors. Taylore Phillips, Emily Johnson and Jessica Hartenstein were the team’s other leaders.

Other clubs that competed saw Clear Creek B finish fourth with a 403, North Shore at 404, Clear Creek A carding a 408 and Clear Lake A earning a 424. Dobie placed 12th with a 475 and Deer Park was 15th at 538.

In other Lady Maverick golf news, Christina Stringham, the team’s state tournament qualifier last spring, participated in the Region III Preview at Eagle Pointe Golf Course in Mont Belvieu. Stringham shot a 73 in the first round for a two-shot lead going into the second round. Stringham finished with an 82 and claimed third place behind first-place winner Portland Rosen of Clements and Jenny Kang of Mayde Creek.

Memorial’s girls also competed in the Willis Invitational at The Links of Westfork in Conroe. Stringham won the tournament by shooting a round of 77. In second place was Anne Benckman of Willis with an 80.

On the boys’ side, the Mavericks competed in the Brazoswood Invitational at The Wilderness Golf Club and the Pearland High School Invitational at Southwyck.

Zach Chavez led the Mavericks with two Top-10 finishes by carding a pair of 85s at the two tournaments.

The Mavericks were also led by Garrett Bitner, Jackson Bailey, Taylor Williams and Colby McArthur. Williams’ 89 was good for a top-20 finish at The Wilderness.

“I am really proud of the kids’ effort under the circumstances. We have hit balls on campus since the beginning of the year. Baywood Country Club got hit bard by the hurricane and Pasadena Municipal has not been available,” Boyd said. “I am looking forward to getting the kids out to the courses so we can get a lot of playing in. Our goal is to compete for the district championship and go to region. I think those goals are within our reach.”
